ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 1 St. Cloud State Wrestling will open their 2021-22 season with the traditional Black and Red Classic this Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. CST in Halenbeck Hall. SCSU will unveil their 2021 NCAA National Championship Banner, hold their National Championship Ring Ceremony and honor 2020-21 St. Cloud State Male Athlete of the Year Devin FitzPatrick as part of the night’s festivities. The Black and Red will be live-streamed on the NSIC Network.
This year’s Black and Red Classic will be coached by distinguished Huskies alumni Devin FitzPatrick (2021) and Matt Nelson (2017). FitzPatrick was a three-time All-American for St. Cloud State, winning three Super Region V Championships at 165 and finishing Third at the 2021 NCAA Championships. A three-time All-NSIC honoree, FitzPatrick helped lead St. Cloud State to three NCAA Titles and qualified for four National Tournaments. Nelson was a force at 141 during his Huskies career, finishing as an All-American twice and guiding SCSU to their second NCAA Championship in 2015-16. The Big Lake native finished Fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2013 and 2016 while recording one of the most storied comebacks in Huskies history during his second trip to the Tournament, coming back from a 12-0 deficit to win 19-15 as time expired in the 141 Quarterfinals.
The first 100 fans to enter Halenbeck Hall on Thursday will receive a free 2021 St. Cloud State Wrestling National Championship poster. SCSU’s intrasquad match serves as a key moment in the Huskies’ season preparation as they establish their dual starters for 2021-22. The Black and Red features two teams chosen from the current St. Cloud State roster, with bout schedules set to be released later in the week.
Following the Black and Red, St. Cloud State will open their NCAA Title defense on Saturday, November 6 at the Finn Grinaker Open in Moorhead.
