Metz to Represent Bison at U23 World Championships

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State senior wrestler Brandon Metz will represent the Bison and compete for the United States at the 2021 U23 World Championships next week in Belgrade, Serbia.

The world championships for Metz, who will compete in the 130kg weight class, will begin on Monday, November 1, as men’s Greco-Roman action kicks off the competition. The qualification rounds for the Greco-Roman 130 kg division, and four other weight classes, are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. local time in Belgrade, which will be 3:30 a.m. CT.

“Competing for Team USA is a great privilege,” said Metz. “I remember when I first got into the sport, I always paid extra attention to the Greco team and how they were doing. I’m a sports buff and as a wrestler, I’ve always followed the US teams when competing in the world championships, whether that’s the senior level or even age level teams like cadets and juniors.”

The semifinals for five weight divisions are slated for a 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. CT) start Monday evening after the opening ceremonies. The finals will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. CT).

The world championships will not be a single-elimination event, and instead will be held in a repechage format. The repechage rounds will be Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. local time (3:30 a.m. CT).

“We are really proud of Brandon, the work that he has put in, and how he represents Bison Wrestling,” said head coach Roger Kish. “The chance to compete at the world championships is something that he has earned through his training and commitment as a wrestler with the Bison and the Bison Wrestling Club.”

Metz earned a place on the Team USA roster for the U23 World Championships after winning the United World Wrestling Under-23 Greco-Roman national championship in late May in Lincoln, Nebraska. A two-time NCAA Division I championship qualifier from West Fargo, N.D., Metz won all five of his matches in the 130kg weight class at the US national championships competing for the Bison Wrestling Club.

“It’s a cool feeling to be one of those guys getting to represent my home country,” added Metz. “I have an amazing supporting cast that has really pushed and prepared me, especially in the last few months, in preparation for the event and I can’t wait to compete with everybody’s support helping to push me.”

In the weeks leading up to the trip to Serbia, Metz traveled to Northern Michigan for the U23 World Team camp in preparation for the world championships. Along with wrestling for the Bison, Metz also wrestles with the Bison Wrestling Club, which is a USA Wrestling certified Olympic Regional Training Center.

“We are very pleased with the training center we have and the opportunities it provides athletes like Brandon to complete on the national and global stage,” added Kish. “It means a lot to this program to see the continued success that Brandon and others have achieved, whether it be at the college level with NCAA Championships, or at the USA and world levels with national and world championship events.”

A three-time North Dakota state champion at heavyweight for West Fargo High School, Metz was also a two-time USA Wrestling Greco-Roman national champion. He placed third at the UWW Senior Greco-Roman Nationals in May.

The world championship event will be live-streamed from Serbia on FloWrestling.
