Gophers Wrap Up Busy Weekend at Daktronics Open

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of Minnesota wrestling program sent 14 student-athletes to the Daktronics Open hosted by South Dakota State, coming away with two finalists and seven placewinners.

It was the second-straight day of competition for the Gophers, as Minnesota also competed against Oklahoma State in a dual on Saturday night, where they lost 23-10. All athletes who competed in the dual against the sixth-ranked Cowboys did not compete on Sunday at the open tournament.

True freshman Vance VomBaur and redshirt sophomore Marcos Polanco, were the Maroon & Gold’s two finalists at 133 and 141, respectively. VomBaur competed well all day with wins over Iowa State’s Daniel Huston and a pair of Northern Iowa opponents, Julian Farber and Kyle Biscoglia. The Greeley, Colo., native ultimately fell in the finals against a veteran Michigan opponent Drew Mattin. Marcos Polanco also had a pair of good wins over Gabriel Schumm (North Dakota State) and Carter Happel (Northern Iowa), before dropping his finals bout with Iowa State opponent Zach Redding.

Minnesota’s next best performance came from true freshman Bennett Tabor, who took fourth at 197 pounds with a 2-2 record on the day. Three Gophers took fifth place, including true freshman Jager Eisch, who majored ranked opponent No. 17 Liam Cronin (Nebraska) in the fifth-place match by a score of 8-0. Drew Roberts rounded out the Gopher placewinners with a fifth-place finish.

Minnesota’s next competition is Sunday, Nov. 28 when they host the South Dakota State Jackrabbits for their second dual of the year inside Maturi Pavilion. Sunday’s dual will also act as the program’s Military Appreciation Day.
