ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State redshirt sophomore wrestler Anthony Herrera has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week following his outstanding Huskies debut weekend at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open at Concordia-Moorhead. The two-time junior college All-American went 2-0 in the Gold 157 division to win a Cobber Open title, defeating No. 10 Braydon Huber (U-Mary) by a 6-3 decision in his SCSU debut before earning a 4-2 tiebreaker decision over No. 3 Colby Njos in the finals. Including his first-round bye, Herrera scored 16.0 team points for No. 1 SCSU.
“Anthony wrestled stingy all day,” said head coach Steve Costanzo, “He fights in every position and wrestles hard for 7 minutes. When you do that, he becomes hard to beat.”
Herrera is in his first season at St. Cloud State following two stellar campaigns at junior college powerhouse Western Wyoming College. The 157-pounder earned two All-American honors during his time in Rock Springs, winning a pair of Rocky Mountain District Championships at 157 and taking Third at the 2020-21 NJCAA National Championships.
“The key for Anthony is to stay consistent, to keep working hard and stay hungry,” Costanzo continued, “If he maintains his work ethic and continues to get better in the practice room, he will continue to find success.”
The Huskies continue their 2021-22 season with the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday, November 13.
