MOORHEAD, Minn. – A runner-up finish by freshman Clayson Mele led the way for the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team Saturday at the Cobber Open, which was held Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
Four Dragon wrestlers wrestled attached with the rest of the individuals wrestling unattached.
Mele was second at 125 in the Maroon Division, going 2-1. He pinned Zane Almon of Itasca Community College in 4:51 and followed with a pin over Owen Bertram of Concordia in 6:35. He lost to UMary’s Chase Milligan, 18-10 in his final match.
Sophomore Peyton Ringling was third at 157 in the Maroon Division, going 4-1. He pinned Justin Doby of Northland Community and Technical College in 1:50 before falling to James Pieranedozzi of St. Cloud State 8-1. He came back with a 4-0 win over UMary’s Jacob Morgan and then topped Alexander McPhee of Concordia, 10-8. Ringling beat pinned Joshua Worral of Itasca Community College 1:59 in the third-place match.
Sophomore Samuel Grove, wrestling up a division at 285, was 2-2 and placed fifth in the Gold Division. He beat Austin Ratliff of Concordia 10-4 before losing to UMary’s Dominic Tudor 3-0 and St. Cloud State’s Kaleb Haase 7-0. Grove pinned UMary’s Levi Malcolm in 2:57 in the fifth-place match.
Senior Steven Abbott was fourth in the Gold Division at 197 pounds after going 2-2. He topped UMary’s Jose Reyes 13-10 before being pinned by Concordia’s Gabriel Zierden in 3:48. He came back to pin UMary’s Luke Tweeton in 2:45 before being pinned by North Dakota State’s Lathan Duda in 3:30.

The Dragons’ next scheduled action is Nov. 13 at the Bison Open in Fargo.
