Mustangs kick off 2021-22 season at the Dakota Wesleyan Open

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will begin the 2021-22 season this Saturday competing at the Dakota Wesleyan Open hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D.

SMSU first-year head coach Chayse Jackson expects 17 wrestlers to represent SMSU during the open which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

SMSU Notes: The team returns eight individuals who competed in last season’s Super Region V tournament in Aberdeen, S.D. The Mustangs finished just outside the preseason NWCA Top 25 poll, receiving 10 votes. Junior Caden Steffen was ranked fifth at 184 pounds in the NWCA Division II preseason rankings after earning All-American status with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships last season. Alongside Steffen is Jacob Dykes, a junior heavyweight who finished last season 5-4 and 3-2 in NSIC matches. Dykes finished 2-2 in the super regionals, falling in the consolation finals. Junior Jackson Stauffacher returns after a 5-4 record in the 2020-21 season that also saw him go 2-2 in the NCAA Super Regional. He finished the season 2-0 in major decisions and 3-2 in decisions. Sophomore Luke Peterson returns after a 4-2 season that also saw him compete in the Super Regionals. Also returning from the Super Regional lineup is 125 Ben Emrich, 141 Justin Sampson, 157 Sean Howk, and 165 Carter Marx.

SMSU will wrestle in two more opens, including the Augsburg Open on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Mustangs will open conference duals on Friday, Dec. 10, in Aberdeen, S.D., against Northern State at 7 p.m., and will open its home schedule on Friday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. versus Upper Iowa.
