Pentz, Weber, Metz Take Home Titles to Lead NDSU at Bison Open

Fargo, N.D. – Owen Pentz, Luke Weber, and Brandon Metz claimed titles for the North Dakota State wrestling team, who also claimed four runner-up finishes and two third-place finishes at the 50th Annual Bison Open Saturday at the Scheels Center.

A career day for sophomore Owen Pentz highlighted the afternoon as the Morgan, Utah native recorded pins in every match to sweep the 197-pound tournament title. Pentz started the day with a career-best pin, taking down Bennett Tabor of Minnesota in just 53 seconds, breaking his previous best of 1:38 set in the season opener last week.

Pentz would then record pins in times of 1:03 and 1:41 before advancing to the final where he defeated Minnesota’s Michial Foy with a second-period pin at 4:07. Pentz, who was the only wrestler at the Bison Open to secure four victories by pin, now has five pins in six matches this season, already surpassing his freshman total of four pins last year.

Weber was the first Bison to claim a title, as he secured a pin over Minnesota’s No. 18 Andrew Sparks to win the 165-pound title. The senior picked up a reversal and then a pin at 4:54, just before the end of the second period to cap a 3-0 day on the mat.

Weber started his afternoon with a pin at 5:52 against the University of Mary’s Leo Mushinsky before defeating Minnesota’s Nathan Fuller by major decision in the semifinal, 14-1.

The heavyweight division also saw a Bison take third, as Juan Mora, who wrestled unattached, advanced to the semifinals before falling to Nevills in a 3-2 decision. Mora rebounded with a 3-2 win in the third-place match.

Following an 8-2 win in the semis, Franek dropped the 157 championship to No. 5 Brayton Lee of Minnesota in overtime by a SV-1 6-4 score.
