SMSU makes the trek north for Augsburg Open in Minneapolis

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team continues action Saturday in Minneapolis for the Augsburg Open starting at 9 a.m.

SMSU first-year head coach Chayse Jackson expects 17 wrestlers to represent SMSU during the open which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

SMSU Notes: The Mustangs come in after having six different place winners at the Dakota Wesleyan Open last Saturday … No. 5-ranked Caden Steffen led the way, going 5-0 and placing first at 184. He won by fall in each of his first three matches, with all three matches going less than a period, before defeating Jacari Deal of Nebraska-Kearney 5-3 in the semifinals and Kolby Kost of Augustana 13-6 in the finals … Newly ranked No. 14 on InterMat, Jacob Dykes finished the day 4-1, finishing second at 285. After winning his first three matches by fall, Dykes matched up with No. 6-ranked AJ Cooper of Fort Hays State in the semifinals, winning by decision 10-5. Dykes would end his day losing by fall at 4:33 to Steven Hajas of Augustana … Neil Hanson wrapped up the day 5-2, winning five straight matches after dropping his first match to battle into the third-place match before ending in fourth … Hunter Pfantz and Lucas Hodges each finished 4-2 in fourth place at 133 and 157, respectively, and Dillon McEachran would finish the day 4-2 and in fifth place.

SMSU will wrestle in one more open at MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Dec. 5. The Mustangs will open conference duals on Friday, Dec. 10, in Aberdeen, S.D., against Northern State at 7 p.m., and will open its home schedule on Friday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. versus Upper Iowa.
