MINNEAPOLIS — With upper-weight wrestlers winning six of eight bouts in the two matches, including four by bonus-point decisions, the No. 4-ranked Augsburg University men’s wrestling team rallied twice for victories in its triangular meet on Wednesday afternoon at Si Melby Hall, beating the No. 3-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) 23-19 and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 18-15.
Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, had to rally for wins in both matches. Against No. 3-ranked Stevens, the Auggies trailed 16-7 after six matches but rallied with two technical falls and a pin in the final four matches for the win. Against UW-Eau Claire, which had beaten Stevens 27-19 in Wednesday’s opening dual, the Auggies rallied from a 12-8 deficit after six matches with three wins, including a major decision, in the final four bouts.
No. 4-ranked 184-pounder Nick Rogge (SR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) improved to 7-1 on the season with a pair of bonus-point victories. He used a takedown, two-point near-fall, and three four-point near-falls to dispatch Frank Medina of Stevens by a 16-0 technical fall in just 2:02, and he used a pair of four-point near-falls as part of an 11-point second-period, building a big lead en route to a 16-6 major-decision win over Niall Schoenfelder of UW-Eau Claire.
Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS), the top-ranked wrestler nationally in Division III at 174 pounds, remained unbeaten at 9-0 with a pair of wins. He collected 10 takedowns in a 24-9, third-period technical fall win over Stefan Major of Stevens, then had a tight match with UW-Eau Claire’s Jared Strickler, winning 5-2.
Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) improved to 6-0 on the season with a pair of bonus-point wins at 157 pounds. He used five takedowns, a pair of reversals and a two-point near-fall to score an 18-4, major-decision win over No. 15-ranked Hunter Gutierrez of Stevens. In his match against Adam Rients of UW-Eau Claire, he built a 13-4 lead after two periods, then used two takedowns and a four-point near-fall to end the match 11 seconds early in a 23-5 technical fall.
Wyatt Kaczrowski (FY, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) improved to 9-5 on the season with a 1-1 day, with his win coming in an 8-1 triumph over Stevens’ Akhil Vega, ranked No. 7 nationally at 125 pounds. He turned a takedown into a four-point near-fall late in the first period to build a 6-0 lead against Vega.
No. 4-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) capped the comeback win over Stevens with a 1:07 pin of Joseph Russell. He was edged 4-3 in his second match, against No. 12-ranked Mason Hawkins of UW-Eau Claire. Kim is now 9-2 on the season.
Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) went 1-1 at 197 pounds, as did Brady Gross (JR, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at 141.
FOR THE FOES
UW-Eau Claire’s Hawkins, Jack Marley (125), Javon Taschuk (133), and Chase Schmidt (ranked No. 7 at 165) each went 2-0 on the day.
Top-ranked 149-pounder Brett Kaliner of Stevens scored a pair of technical falls. No. 3-ranked Kyle Sneodorn had a pin and a major decision, and No. 7-ranked 197-pounder Michael Dooley scored two wins with a major decision.
