NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Four Augsburg University men’s wrestlers won individual titles, and 12 Auggies earned top-six finishes, as the Auggies finished second at the North Central College Invitational, held on Saturday.
Augsburg, ranked No. 7 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, finished second at the 15-team meet with 154.0 points. Twenty-three Auggies combined to go 60-34 on the day with 17 pins, two technical falls, and 11 major decisions. Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio), ranked No. 11 nationally, won the meet with 32 competitors scoring 166.0 points. Top-ranked North Central (Ill.) was third, with No. 2-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse fifth and No. 5-ranked Wabash (Ind.) sixth.
Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS), who moved into the No. 3 spot in the NWCA’s Division III individual rankings at 157 pounds, earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler honor with a dominant performance to win his weight class, going 4-0 with two pins and two technical falls. In the title match, he claimed a 17-1, 5:28 technical fall of No. 13-ranked Stanley Bleich of Baldwin-Wallace. Shilson is now 15-0 on the season with nine technical falls, three major decisions, and two pins.
No. 2-ranked 174-pounder Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS) improved to 17-1 on the season with his weight-class title, going 4-0 with a pin and two major decisions. He scored a 5:00 pin of Luke Silva of Aurora (Ill.) in the finals. Of his 17 wins this season, Nielsen has three pins, four technical falls, and four major decisions. Nielsen is now 104-20 in his college career.
Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), ranked No. 6 nationally at 285 pounds, went 4-0 with two first-period pins and an 8-0 major decision win over Robby Bates of North Central in the finals, winning his weight class. Kim is now 18-3 on the season with nine pins, a technical fall, and two major decisions.
Cade Willis (FY, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) claimed his first collegiate tournament victory, winning the 141-pound weight class with a 4-0 record and a first-period pin. Willis is now 15-4 on the season with six pins and two major decisions.
At 125 pounds, Wyatt Kaczrowski (FY, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) finished second, while Derek Steele (FY, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) finished third.
Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) finished second at 149 pounds, going 3-1 with a pin and major decision.
Justin Stauffacher (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) finished fourth at 133 pounds, as did Brady Gross (JR, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at 141 and Parker Venz (FY, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) at 197.
Finishing sixth for the Auggies were Kaden Reetz (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) at 157 and Connor Thorsten (SO, Foley, Minn./Foley HS) at 165.
