Gophers Finish with Three Placers at Cliff Keen Invitational

LAS VEGAS – Minnesota wrapped up competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as they walked away with three total placers on the weekend. As a team, the Gophers also scored a total of 34 team points on the weekend.

Jake Gliva came out of the weekend as Minnesota’s highest finisher in the tournament, taking sixth place at 133 pounds. Gliva kicked off his second day with a pair of decision victories over Cornell’s Dominic LaJoie and Binghamton’s Anthony Sobatker by scores of 4-0 and 4-3, respectively. However, Gliva would fall in the consolation semifinals by sudden victory to Hayden Druery of Utah Valley, and would lose via pinfall in the fifth-place bout against Navy’s Joshua Koderhandt.

He defeated conference opponent Frankie Tal Shahar of Northwestern by a 4-2 sudden-victory decision, but would lose by tech fall to No. 11 Grant Willits (Oregon State) in the next round of the consolations. Dropping down to the seventh-place match, Bergeland would rebound by defeating CSU-Bakersfield’s Angelo Martinoni for the second time this weekend by major decision.

Michael Blockhus started his day off with a good win against Wyoming’s Jaron Jensen, but would drop his next two matches against ranked opponents in No. 6 Jaden Abas (Stanford) and No. 15 Legend Lamer (Cal Poly) to take eighth place for the tournament.

The Gophers will now head home to prepare for yet another tournament next weekend, as they will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 11 to partake in the UNI Open in what will be their final competition before the holiday break.
