MINNEAPOLIS — The No. 4-ranked Augsburg University men’s wrestling team won five of the last six bouts of the match, but it was not enough to overcome a 19-0 deficit to top-ranked Loras College, as the Duhawks claimed a 23-17 dual-meet win over the Auggies on Thursday night.
Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, trailed 19-0 after the first four bouts of the dual, as No. 1-ranked Loras picked up a major decision and two pins. Augsburg claimed two major decisions among its five wins in the last six bouts, but a major-decision win for the Duhawks at 184 pounds clinched the match victory.
The Auggie comeback started at 157 pounds, as Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) was dominant in a 17-4, major-decision win over Loras’ Zeke Smith. Improving to 7-0 on the season, Shilson built a 6-3 lead after two periods, then used a takedown and a pair of four-point near-falls to clinch the major decision.
In a rematch of last year’s 174-pound NWCA Division III national semifinals, top-ranked Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS) improved to 10-0 on the season with a 5-2 win over Loras’ No. 3-ranked Jacob Krakow. Tied at 2-2 after two periods, Nielsen scored an escape and converted a takedown in the third period for the winning margin.
At 285-pounds, No. 4-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) gave the Auggies a positive end to the dual meet, avenging a 4-3 loss to Loras’ Wyatt Wriedt in last year’s national title match with a 7-3 triumph. Kim outlasted Wriedt with two huge takedowns in the third period, improving to 10-2 on the season.
Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) was dominant in his 15-2, major-decision win over Loras’ Clint Murphy at 197 pounds, giving Murphy his first loss of the season. A reversal and four-point near-fall in the second period gave Schwanebeck-Ostermann a 9-2 lead after two periods, and another four-point near-fall in the third period extended his lead, lifting him to a 5-2 record on the year.
The biggest upset of the night came at 165 pounds, as Augsburg’s Matt Rogge (FY, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) scored an 8-6 win over Loras’ No. 4-ranked Gabe Fiser. Tied 1-1 early in the third period, Rogge converted a takedown and four-point near-fall to take a 7-2 lead, then held off a reversal and takedown by Fiser to claim the win.
