March Claims Record as Bison Ride Bonus Points to Dual Sweep in New York

VESTAL, N.Y. – Kellyn March and Luke Weber recorded pins in both duals to lead the way for North Dakota State wrestling, as the Bison swept through Edinboro, 34-9, and host Binghamton, 27-12, Friday afternoon at West Gymnasium.

The Bison (4-1) secured nine bonus-point victories on the day, including five over Edinboro (1-3) and four against Binghamton (1-5).

March set an NDSU Division I era record with a pin in just 12 seconds over Edinboro’s Clayton Bashor to close out the first match. March set the record for fastest pin against a D1 opponent, fastest pin in a dual, and fastest overall pin since the Bison started competing at the D1 level in 2004-05.

The previous fast pin came from Justin Solberg in November 2011 with a pin of 15 seconds at the Daktronics Open.

March would also record a pin to close out the Binghamton dual. The pins are the second and third of March’s career. His previous best pin came in a time of 1:25 last season against Greg Coapstick of South Dakota State.

Weber also recorded pins in both of his duals to bring his total to five on the season and 12 for his career. The senior took down Edinboro’s Dylan Kohn in just 63 seconds to begin his day. In the second dual, Weber took down Brevin Cassella of Binghamton with 18 seconds left.

Joining March and Weber with two victories on the day were three other Bison; Dylan Drogemueller, Jared Franek, and Austin Brenner.

Franek kept pace with Weber as the two each have 48 career victories. Weber dominated his opening match with a 15-0 tech fall in just 3:39 against Edinboro’s Alex Garee. Franek would then nearly secure another tech fall, winning 14-0 over Binghamton’s Logan Gumble. Franek now has eight tech fall victories and 10 victories by major decision, both atop the active leaders for the Bison.

Brenner would also secure a bonus-point victory on the day, as he defeated Edinboro’s Joey Arnold 9-1. Brenner also pulled an upset over Binghamton’s Jacob Nolan, defeating the No. 29 ranked InterMat wrestler with a 3-1 decision.

Droegemueller started off both duals on the afternoon. He earned wins by decision over Edinboro’s Gabe Willochell (8-5) and Binghamton’s Michael Zarif (4-3).

Freshman Gaven Sax would earn a bonus-point win against Edinboro with a 13-5 major decision for his second career dual victory.

Fellow freshman DJ Parker made his official Bison debut on Friday, going 1-1, including a 17-2 tech fall victory over Binghamton’s Sam DePrez. Parker nearly had a takedown against InterMat No. 33 ranked Ethan Ducca with just three seconds remaining, but was unable to keep the move in play, as he fell 3-2 in his first dual of the day.

The Bison will return to action on Saturday, as NDSU travels to the University of Buffalo to take on the Bulls at 7 p.m. inside Alumni Arena. NDSU will also have several wrestlers competing at the UNI Open Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
