Mustangs open dual season at Northern State

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team hits the mat for their first dual of the season on Friday, traveling to Aberdeen, S.D., to take on Northern State at 7 p.m.

MUSTANGS IN THE RANKINGS: A pair of Mustangs find themselves ranked inside the top 16 of the InterMat Wrestling DII National Rankings, updated Dec. 8 … After another 3-0 day to finish first at the Auggie Open on Nov. 20, Jackson Stauffacher jumped up one spot to No. 15 at 125 pounds … Caden Steffen stayed steady at the fourth spot at 184 pounds following a 3-0 weekend … Steffen is also ranked sixth in the NWCA Coaches poll, released Dec. 3.

LAST TIME OUT: The Mustangs closed its open schedule with nine place winners and a pair of first-place finishers at the Dragon Open in Moorhead, Minn., hosted by MSU Moorhead … For the second consecutive open, Jackson Stauffacher would go 3-0 and place first at 125 pounds … He is now 6-0 to start the season, including a pair of first-place finishes … Caden Steffen returned to the mat with an undefeated day at 184, finishing first after winning by tech fall in the quarterfinals, a 6-1 decision in the semifinals, and a 12-1 major decision in the finals … Dillon McEachranearned a second-place finish at 197, winning a pair of decisions over NSIC foes before having to medically forfeit the first-place match … Brandon Lalla earned his first wins of the season, going 2-1 to finish second at 174 pounds … Hunter Pfantz finished the day 1-2 to slot in third place at 133, Lucas Hodges and Carter Marx finished fourth at 157 and 174, respectively, and Tyler Soltau and Elijah Sterner finished in sixth place at 149 and 165.

NORTHERN STATE NOTES: Northern State (2-0 overall, 1-0 NSIC) comes in after a 19-13 victory over Minot State last Friday in their conference opener and 14 placements at the Dragon Open on Sunday … NSU has one wrestler ranked in the latest NWCA rankings, with Kolten Roth (141) ranking 11th … Northen State had a pair of first-place finishers at the Dragon Open, with Marcus Placide (197) winning the red division and Nathan Schauer (285) winning the white division … Landen Fischer (125) placed second, losing to Stauffacher in the finals.

NSU SERIES HISTORY: SMSU leads the all-time series 29-11-3 in a series that dates back to 1979. NSU has won two of the past three meetings, including an 18-16 victory in their last meeting on Feb. 4, 2021. SMSU won eight matches in a row from 2010-11 to 2017-18.
