Mustangs return to the mat Sunday in Moorhead for Dragon Open

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team returns to the mat on Sunday in Moorhead for the Dragon Open, hosted by MSU Moorhead, starting at 10 a.m.

SMSU head coach Chayse Jackson expects 18 wrestlers to represent SMSU during the open.

MUSTANGS IN THE INTERMAT RANKINGS: Three Mustangs find themselves ranked inside the top 16 of the InterMat Wrestling DII National Rankings, updated Dec. 1 … After a 3-0 day to finish first at the Auggie Open on Nov. 20, Jackson Stauffacher jumped to No. 16 at 125 pounds … Caden Steffen is the highest-ranked Mustang of the three, moving up a spot to fourth at 184 pounds … Jacob Dykes rounds out the individuals, slotting in at No. 16 at 285 pounds … SMSU has also entered the team rankings, moving into a tie at 21st in Division II. They are one of six teams from the NSIC ranked in the top 25.

LAST TIME OUT: The Mustangs come in after having six different place winners at the Auggie Invite, hosted by Augsburg, on Saturday, Nov. 20 … Jackson Stauffacher led the way, going 3-0 and placing first at 125 pounds. He won by major decision to open his day before winning by decision over Brandon Murphy of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the semifinals and Isaac Wiegel of Wisconsin-Platteville in the finals … Neil Hanson finished the day 3-1, placing third at 285. Hanson would begin his day with a win by decision before defeating Walter West of Luther College 5-3 in the quarterfinals. After losing by major decision against Ben Kawczynski of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Hanson would defeat Jordan Baumler of Upper Iowa by medical forfeit in the third-place match … Luke Peterson would win a pair of matches at 141 to get into the semifinals before losing a pair of close decisions to finish the day with a fourth-place finish … After a win in the first round and a loss in the quarterfinals, Carter Marx would rattle off three straight wins to make it all the way through the consolation bracket and finish fifth … Dillon McEachran would take a similar patch as Marx, falling in the quarterfinals before winning a pair of matches by decision to reach the fifth-place match. He would finish the day in sixth after falling to Max Schmitz of Wisconsin-Platteville … Hunter Pfantz would also finish sixth on the day, winning three matches in between a pair of losses.

The Mustangs will open conference duals on Friday, Dec. 10, in Aberdeen, S.D., against Northern State at 7 p.m., and will open its home schedule on Friday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. versus Upper Iowa.
