NDSU Completes New York Trip with Dominant Win at Buffalo

AMHERST, N.Y. – The North Dakota State wrestling team completed a sweep of its three-game road trip to New York this week, defeating the University of Buffalo 34-7 at Alumni Arena Saturday night.

The Bison (5-1) picked up four bonus-point victories, including three pins, to dispatch the host Bulls (3-4) to cap three wins in two days.

Dylan Droegemueller started off the night with a pin in the first dual of the night at 141 pounds. Droegemueller held a 7-0 lead over Ben Freeman in the second period before securing a takedown followed up by a pin call at the 4:32 mark.

Luke Weber and Owen Pentz would also secure pins for the Bison. Weber rallied in his match at 165 pounds. With Noah Grover holding a lead, Weber secured a reversal and then pinned Grover with 36 seconds left to complete his weekend at 3-0 with three pins.

Pentz had a more dominant match at 197 pounds, which also secured victory for the Bison in the dual. Pentz secured an early takedown of Sam Mitchell and worked the Buffalo wrestler into an attacking position before getting the fall call just 1:40 into the match.

Brandon Metz recorded the final bonus-point victory for the Bison with a major decision in the heavyweight matchup over Toby Cahill. Metz recorded four takedowns and also had a two-point near fall to cruise.

Jared Franek and Kellyn March also picked up big wins for the Bison and both wrestlers won after Buffalo picked up each of their two victories.

Franek allowed only escape points while recording five takedowns in a 10-4 decision against Ty Raines. March didn’t allow a point and had a takedown with two reversals to win 6-0 over Derek Spann.

In his first dual match of the season, Riley Habisch picked up a narrow 3-2 decision over Giuseppe Hoose at 174 pounds.

The other Bison victory came at 184 pounds, where freshman DJ Parker recorded his second victory of the weekend. Parker had four takedowns and a reversal in an 11-7 win over Pete Acciardi.

The Bison are scheduled to be off for the remainder of 2021 and will return to action at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga hosted Southern Scuffle to ring in the New Year on January 1-2.
