NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Led by dominating individual titles from 109-pounder Emily Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) and 143-pounder Katie Lange (FY, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS), the Augsburg University women’s wrestling claimed a fourth-place finish at the North Central College Open on Saturday.
Augsburg finished fourth with 77.5 points. The field featured six of the top 15 teams in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA national rankings — top-ranked King (Tenn.; first with 153.0 points), No. 3-ranked North Central (Ill., second with 124.5), No. 2-ranked McKendree (Ill., third with 91.0), sixth-ranked Augsburg (fourth with 77.5), No. 11-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point (sixth with 46.0) and No. 15-ranked Schreiner (Texas, seventh with 37.0).
Shilson, ranked No. 1 nationally at 109 pounds, won her weight class and earned tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler honors with three first-period technical falls, all 10-0 victories. Her title match was a 10-0, 1:57 win over No. 5-ranked Sydney Petzinger of North Central. In her four victories this season, Shilson has yet to allow an opponent point in four 10-0 wins, completed in two minutes, 22 seconds. Shilson is now 26-0 in her college career with eight pins and 16 technical falls.
Lange continued her remarkable start to her collegiate career with the title at 143 pounds, improving to 11-0 on the season. After a first-period pin to open her run on Saturday, she claimed an 8-6 win over No. 6-ranked London Houston of King, then pinned top-ranked Ashlynn Ortega of King in 3:34. Of her 11 wins, five are by pin and five are by technical fall.
No. 4-ranked 155-pounder Marlynne Deede (JR, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) overcame a first-round loss with three wins, two by pin and an injury-default win over top-ranked Alara Boyd of McKendree, to finish third in her weight class. Deede is now 10-2 on the season with three pins and six technical falls.
At 136 pounds, No. 5-ranked Autumn Flanigan (SO, Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) and No. 8-ranked Nina Makem (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) tied for fifth place, with Flanigan going 2-2 with two pins, and Makem going 5-1 with five technical falls.
Faith Tuttle (JR, North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul HS) went 4-2 with two pins and a technical fall to finish fourth at 191 pounds.
UP NEXT: Augsburg competes at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University (Ill.) on Dec. 29-30.
