MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Claiming seven individual and co-individual titles, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team won the nine-team Cornell College Cliff Keen/Mike Duroe Invitational, held on Saturday.
Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III tournament national rankings and No. 8 in the dual team rankings, won titles in six weight classes and had 16 of its 19 wrestlers finish in the top eight in their brackets. The Auggies combined for a 52-21 record with 23 pins, three technical falls and five major decisions.
Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS), ranked No. 3 nationally at 174 pounds, dominated in winning his weight class, scoring a pin, two technical falls and a 13-3 major-decision win in the finals. Nielsen outscored his opponents by a 51-7 margin on Saturday, scoring 15-0 and 17-2 technical-fall victories. Nielsen is now 21-1 on the season with four pins, six technical falls and five major decisions, and is now 108-20 in his career.
Competing in his second Augsburg tournament after transferring at the semester break from Division I North Dakota State, Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) went 4-0 with a pair of sub-minute falls to win the 141-pound weight class. Stuhl, ranked No. 2 nationally at 141, is now 13-2 on the season, and is a perfect 9-0 as an Auggie.
Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), ranked No. 7 nationally at 285 pounds, scored five victories, including three pins and a major decision, to win his weight class. Improving to 27-3 on the season, Kim scored pins of 2:25, 1:28 and 3:41 to open his tournament run, then scored an 11-3 major decision win before taking the title with a 3-1 win over Brady Vogel of Loras (Iowa).
Tanner Kroells (JR, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) scored his second tournament win of the season, going 4-0 with two pins and a major decision to capture the 149-pound crown. Kroells is now 16-6 on the year.
Derek Steele (FY, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) claimed his first collegiate tournament title, winning the 125-pound crown with two first-period pins and an 11-4 victory in his title match, improving to 16-3 on the year.
Nick Rogge (SR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) and Adam Sylvester (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) shared the title at 184 pounds, with Rogge claiming a pin and Sylvester winning his three matches by pin, technical fall and major decision. Rogge, ranked No. 11 nationally at 184, is now 17-2 on the season, while Sylvester is now 14-4.
Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS), ranked No. 9 nationally at 197 pounds, finished second in his weight class, with his lone loss a 5-2 decision to No. 12-ranked Donovan Corn of Luther (Iowa).
Austin Gabbert (FY, Lester Prairie, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) finished second at 133 pounds, as did Brady Gross (JR, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at 141.
Placing third for the Auggies were Wyatt Kaczrowski (FY, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) at 125 and Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) at 149. Kieler Carlson (SO, Lakeland, Minn./Stillwater HS) finished fourth at 133, as did Parker Venz (FY, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) at 197. Justin Stauffacher (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) finished sixth at 133, and Matt Rogge (FY, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) finished eighth at 165.
