Augustana Returns to Dual Action at Northern State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.– The No. 10 Augustana wrestling team takes on Northern State in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on Thursday in NSIC dual-action. The event is slated for 7 p.m. On Saturday, AU will host the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs at the Elmen Center at 2 p.m.

Saturday’s dual is the Vikings Kids Club Match.

The Events
The Vikings will be on the mat with the No. 21 Northern State Wolves on Thursday at 7 p.m. Augustana will make its home debut for the new year on Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting the No. 25 Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. The duals mark the fourth and fifth times the Vikings will wrestle top-25 opponents.

The Wolves
Northern State is ranked at No. 21 in the NWCA Division II poll and holds a record of 6-0 overall and 2-0 in NSIC dual-action. The Wolves have two individually ranked wrestlers on their roster with James Burks, ranked at No.5 at 157 pounds, and Wyatt Turnquist, who is ranked at No. 8 at 149 pounds.

The Mustangs
Southwest Minnesota State is ranked at No. 25 in the latest NWCA Division II poll. The Mustangs are 0-1 in dual action and are scheduled to wrestle at NSIC opponent Upper Iowa on Friday before coming to the Elmen Center. SMSU has one ranked wrestler in No. 4 Caden Steffen at 184 pounds.

The Vikings
Augustana returns to dual action following the Hastings Open last Saturday. The Vikings saw three wrestlers earn second-place finishes with Connor Simmonds in the 157-pound bracket, Miles Fitzgerald in the 165-pound bracket and Daniel Bishop in the 197-pound bracket.

The Vikings have six wrestlers that are nationally ranked in their respective weight classes. Freshman Jaxson Rohman, of Trimont, Minnesota, earns a spot at No. 5 in the 125-pound weight class. Rohman went 3-0 in December and holds an overall record of 8-1.

Junior Jack Huffman is ranked in the seventh spot at 133 pounds. Huffman went 2-0 at the Hastings Open, recording a technical fall in the first round.

Senior Brandon Carroll is ranked at No. 12 at 141 pounds. Carroll claimed his first victory of the season at 141 pounds against Kolbe O’Brien of Minnesota State.

Sophomore Cade Mueller, competing at 174 pounds, is ranked in the seventh spot. Mueller earned NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors in December after defeating No. 2 Trevor Turriff of Minnesota State.

Junior Kolby Kost moves in at No. 11 at 184 pounds. Kost went 3-1 at the Hastings Open, recording two falls and victory by a 13-9 decision.

Steven Hajas is ranked at No. 7 in the 285-pound bracket. Hajas’s overall record this season is 9-3.
