Minnesota falls to 3-4 on the season as they prepare for road doubleheader next weekend
ANN ARBOR – The University of Minnesota wrestling program dropped a tough 20-14 contest to the fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines on Friday evening.
The Wolverines took six of the ten bouts in the dual, including four of the final five to secure the dual victory.
After Michigan collected the first two wins at 125 and 133 pounds, Jake Bergeland kicked off the scoring for the Maroon & Gold with a huge win over two-time NCAA finalist and fourth-ranked Stevan Micic. Bergeland struck first with the opening takedown and tallied nearly three minutes of riding time at one point in the match, which was enough to push him to the 5-2 victory.
Michael Blockhus and Brayton Lee kept the Gophers rolling with wins of their own at 149 and 157 pounds. Blockhus showcased an offensive attack in his match, including a six-point move in the third period, en route to a major decision over Pat Nolan. Lee required a bit of a comeback in his match after conceding the opening takedown, but he secured two takedowns of his own in the second to lead him to the 5-4 win.
Coming out of the break, Michigan would win the next four matches to put the dual out of reach for the Gophers as the dual closed out with the marquee matchup of the evening between last year’s NCAA finalists Mason Parris and Gable Steveson.
In the heavyweight bout, Steveson rolled to an 18-8 major decision over his familiar foe, dominating on the feet with eight total takedowns in the match, including five in the third period. With the win, Steveson continues to have a perfect bonus point rate on the season with six major decisions and one technical fall.
With the loss, Minnesota falls to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in Big Ten competition, while the Wolverines jump to 7-1 with the victory.
The Gophers will hit the road next weekend as they take on Illinois on Friday, Feb. 4, before traveling to West Lafayette to battle the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday, Feb. 6.
