MINNEAPOLIS – The Gophers displayed a commanding performance in their conference home debut on Sunday afternoon, as they won seven of ten matches and rolled to a 31-9 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats.
Sunday’s dual began at 157 pounds, where Brayton Lee received a forfeit to give the Gophers six points to start the dual, then Cael Carlson earned six points of his own the old-fashioned way by getting the fall against Northwestern’s Erich Byelick in the second period to put the Gophers up 12-0.
Bailee O’Reilly kept the Gophers rolling by knocking off a ranked opponent in No. 18 Troy Fisher via a 9-5 decision victory. Sam Skillings followed that up with his first career dual victory by taking a 4-2 decision against Jon Halvorsen.
Michial Foy closed out the first half with a pin against Brendan Devine, giving Minnesota a 24-0 lead heading into the break.
At heavyweight, Gable Steveson continued his dominant start to the season by defeating No. 14 Lucas Davison by major decision, securing six takedowns in the match against the ranked foe.
After suffering losses at 125 and 133, Jake Bergeland gave Minnesota their last win of the afternoon with a 2-0 decision win against Frankie Tal Shahar.
With the victory, Minnesota’s record will jump to 2-2 on the season while Northwestern will fall to .500 at 2-2 after their second straight loss.
Minnesota will stay home next weekend as they host a pair of duals as a part of Championship Weekend. Action starts on Friday, Jan. 14 as they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 8:00 p.m. CT before returning to Maturi Pavilion to battle the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 1:00 p.m. CT
