No. 2 St. Cloud State dominates No. 15 Upper Iowa in return to NSIC action
St. Cloud, Minn. – No. 2 St. Cloud State Wrestling dominated No. 15 Upper Iowa 34-2 in their return to NSIC contests on Thursday evening, opening the match with four straight bonus-point wins and taking nine of 10 bouts.
No. 2 Kameron Teacher kicked things off with a 17-5 major decision over Jordan Baumler at heavyweight, followed by a 10-0 major decision courtesy of Paxton Creese.
No. 3 Garrett Vos gave the crowd a show in electrifying fashion, tech falling No. 5 Kaden Anderlik 17-1 at 133 pounds.
Cameron Riggs followed up with a thrilling pin, keeping the tone set the rest of the way.
No. 3 Garrett Vos squared off with No. 5 Kaden Anderlik in a highly-anticipated ranked bout at 133 that ended in a completely dominating win by Vos. The All-American opened with a quick takedown and a nearfall in the first, added a stalling point, two back points, and a takedown in the second, and wrapped up the third with another takedown, a stall, and a four-point nearfall to seal the 17-1 tech fall with ride time.
“I was really excited and motivated by what I saw at 133 with Garrett Vos, that was probably the best I’ve seen him in the last two years,” said St. Cloud State Wrestling head coach Steve Costanzo. “I don’t think there’s anybody in the country that can beat Garrett Vos if that Garrett Vos shows up to every match like that. That’s how confident I was with what I saw out of him tonight.”
“There’s still a lot of time to prepare,” said Costanzo. “We’ve got nearly a month to go before the National Tournament, and that’s really what it’s all about. We need to prepare for the Super Region, try to get our best performance ready – because if we don’t, there’s no National Tournament. We really have to get our guys firing on all cylinders, get our guys back, get them healthy, but other than that I felt tonight we performed really well.
