Auggies close regular season with 29-12 win
MOORHEAD, Minn. — Winning seven of the 10 bouts in the dual, including five by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team closed its regular season with a 29-12 win over Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon.
Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III tournament national ranking and No. 8 in the NWCA’s Division III dual-meet rankings, split the first six bouts of the dual with Concordia, ranked No. 29 in the NWCA dual-meet rankings. The Auggies won the final four bouts of the dual, with two major decisions and a pin, to produce the final 17-point margin of victory.
Parker Venz (FY, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) scored the lone pin of the day for the Auggies, with a 37-second match-ender at 197 pounds over Connor Choupek. Now 18-11 on the season, Venz has claimed 13 victories by pin.
No. 2-ranked 157-pounder Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) improved to 25-2 on the season with his 15th win by technical fall, a 21-3 triumph in 5:18 over Tyler Bents. Shilson used five takedowns and a pair of four-point near-falls to claim the victory, his 22nd bonus-point win of the campaign.
At 141, No. 3-ranked Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) pulled away in the third period with a two-point near-fall and four-point near-fall to claim a 12-3 major decision win over Cade Lundeen. A mid-season transfer from Division I North Dakota State, Stuhl is now 20-4 on the season, including a 16-2 record at Augsburg.
The Auggies claimed back-to-back major decisions to snap a 12-12 tie after six bouts. At 174 pounds, Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS) scored an escape, two takedowns and a four-point near-fall in the second period to pull away from Kaden Spindler in a 15-2 win. The No. 2-ranked 174-pounder nationally, Nielsen is now 25-3 on the year, with seven major decisions, seven technical falls and four pins to his credit.
At 184, No. 11-ranked Nick Rogge (SR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) followed Nielsen’s major decision with one of his own, a 10-1 triumph over Ayden Friese. Rogge never trailed in the bout, building a 6-1 first-period lead en route to his 21st win of the season. Now 21-3, Rogge has three major decisions, 12 technical falls and three pins this year.
Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), ranked No. 7 nationally at 285 pounds, used three takedowns and an escape to produce a 7-3 win over Chase Dockter. Kim now has a team-high 30 wins, now 30-6 on the season. Wyatt Kaczrowski (FY, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) opened the match with an 11-5 win over Cole Kubesh at 125, building a 7-3 lead after one period and not trailing after that.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 352-56-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 52 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against strictly Division III opponents, Augsburg is 338-55-1 since the 1979-80 season and 263-45-1 since 1989-90.
Augsburg is now 29-3 in the all-time series against Concordia-Moorhead and has won its last seven duals in a row over the Cobbers.

Kellen Schauer had the lone pin of the day for Concordia, with a 4:35 win over Tanner Kroells (JR, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) at 149.
No 12-ranked 133-pounder Ty Bisek edged Austin Gabbert (FY, Lester Prairie, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) by a 4-2 decision, and Bret Wilson scored a 3-0 win over Matt Rogge (FY, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) at 165 for the other Cobber victories.
UP NEXT: Both teams will compete at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional on Feb. 25-26 in Eau Claire, Wis.
