Johnnies End Season at NCAA Regional

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Saint John’s wrestling ended its 2021-22 season at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional on Friday, Feb. 25, on the campus of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Sophomore Hayden LeMonds (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) was dealt an 8-4 setback in his first match of the day at 165 pounds, but bounced back with a pin of Lakeland’s (Wis.) David Aragon in 1:26. He fell to Elmhurst’s (Ill.) Jeff Nugent by pin in his second consolation bout.

Freshman Levi Henry (Foley, Minn.) lost his opening match at 197 pounds via technical fall but responded with a second-period pin. He ended the season via technical fall to the Blugolds’ Sam Melton in the second consolation match.

Sophomore Ben Gilbertson (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) suffered an 8-1 loss to Concordia-Moorhead’s Kaden Spindler in his first match and exited the tournament with a narrow 5-4 defeat to Stephen Watson of Wheaton (Ill.) in a consolation prelim (pig-tail) at 174 pounds. He ended the season with a team-best 21-16 record.

Freshman Logan Thorsten (Foley, Minn.) dropped a pair of close decisions at 149 pounds, 6-2 to UWEC’s Jake Drexler and 5-3 to K’den McMullin of Pacific (Ore.), to finish with a 16-12 record.
