Pine Island High School Girls Tournament A Success

Minnesota high school wrestling has added a new chapter to its history book. The 2021-22 season marks the first year that the Minnesota State High School League has sanctioned girls wrestling at the 7th through 12th grade level. While girls have been accepted into boys’ programs for several years, this year marks the first season that women are eligible for their own separate Section and State tournaments.

Participants in female wrestling in Minnesota have risen in numbers for the last few years, and this year there are 250 girls spread amongst 101 high school teams. Recognizing that the rising number of girls would benefit from more competition among their peers, Pine Island High School took the initiative to provide that opportunity. After consulting with the MSHSL about what provisions would need to be met, the Pine Island All-Girls High School Wrestling Tournament was born.

The tournament held on Saturday, February 5, 2022, was open to all female wrestlers in grades 7-12 who were affiliated with a high school team. The 12 weight classes set up for Minnesota were used. Wrestlers had to be accompanied by a coach from their program and were required to wear their school-issued uniforms.

Local area schools, as well as several distant programs, were well represented. According to the bracket results, 90 girls wrestled, representing 30 teams. Wrestling teams that attended ranged from Decorah, Iowa to the south, Ortonville to the west, and several teams from northern Minnesota. Decorah had the largest team with 13 participants, while several schools only had one. This was the largest and believed to be the first regular-season MSHSL girls’ tournament in Minnesota.

The tournament was heartily promoted and put together by P.I. Head Coach Ethan Pierson and his coaching staff, P.I. Athletic Director Lisa Myran-Shutte, local Girls Wrestling advocate Jason Elsmore, the Pine Island Wrestling Booster Club, and a host of student and community workers. Cami Snobl, Bruce Barrett, Chad Getschmann, and Amos Hendrickson were inaugural referees. All involved are looking forward to next year’s tournament.
