Seven Podium Finishes for Cobbers On Day 2 at Upper Midwest Regional

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — It was a tough Saturday for Concordia on Day 2 of the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional Meet. The Cobbers entered the day with seven athletes still holding on to hopes of earning a trip to the NCAA National Meet. Unfortunately for the Cobbers, when the bus rolled out of Eau Claire in the late afternoon, there were no tickets on board for nationals.

While Concordia wasn’t able to advance any wrestlers to nationals, the Cobbers did have seven wrestlers record podium finishes for placing in the Top 8 of their weight class. The seven podium finishes helped CC record a total of 76.5 points which earned them eighth place in the final team standings.

Freshman Ty Bisek and junior Gabe Zierden came the closest for Concordia. Both nationally-ranked wrestlers lost in the third-place match which would have earned them a spot at the DIII National Meet.

Bisek, who advanced to the semifinals at 133 on Friday, lost a tight 6-3 decision to No.2-seed Tyler Fleetwood of Wis.-Eau Claire. Bisek responded with an overtime win in the consolation semifinals to earn a spot in the third-place match. Bisek trailed 4-2 late in the third period and went for a shot to get the 2-point takedown, but got caught and ended up losing 6-3.

Zierden needed to win three matches on Saturday to get to nationals at 197. He opened with a 5-2 decision in the consolation quarterfinals. He then moved on to face No.6-seeded Chad Richards of Wis.-Platteville in the consolation semifinals. Zierden outlasted Richards by getting the decisive takedown in the third period and pulling away with an 11-7 decision. Zierden’s regional meet was ended when he lost by a fall to No.1-seeded Beau Yineman of Wis.-Oshkosh in the third-place bout.

Senior Bret Wilson was one of the last three Cobbers left in the regional. He needed three wins on Day 2, and started his trek by beating Alexander Streuder of Wis.-Platteville 9-4 in the consolation quarters at 165. Wilson then lost in the sudden victory period in the consolation semifinals and fell in the fifth-place bout to finish in sixth place.

Kellen Schauer (149), Ayden Friese (184) and Chase Dockter (285) all placed seventh in their weight classes, while Tyler Bents was eighth at 157.
