MINNEAPOLIS — Augsburg University women’s wrestler Emily Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) was named the NCAA Northwest Region Wrestler of the Month of January by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced on Thursday.

The top-ranked wrestler in the NWCA’s NCAA rankings at 109 pounds, Shilson went 9-0 in her January matches, improving her record to 13-0 on the season. At the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky., Jan. 6-7, Shilson went 6-0 with two pins and a 16-second technical fall (also three forfeits), helping to lead the Auggies to a fifth-place team finish. At a home triangular against NAIA ranked teams Iowa Wesleyan and Jamestown (N.D.) last Saturday, Shilson went 3-0 with a pair of 10-0 technical falls — a 2:03 match-ender over Mia Palumbo of Iowa Wesleyan, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA at 109, and a 37-second win over Samantha Weeks of Jamestown.

On the season, Shilson is now 13-0 with two pins and seven technical falls. She is still unbeaten in her collegiate career, now 35-0 with 10 pins and 20 technical falls.

This past fall, Shilson won a pair of international titles, continuing to develop her reputation as one of the top young women’s wrestlers in the world. In August, Shilson won the 50-kilogram (110-pound) title at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russia, and in November, she claimed the 50kg title at the UWW U23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

Shilson is a two-time winner of National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) titles at 109 pounds and a national titlist at the 2020 WCWA national tournament during her collegiate years.

Augsburg finished its dual-meet portion of the 2021-22 season with a 7-2 record, and returns to action this Saturday (2/5) at 9 a.m. at the Grand View University Open in Des Moines, Iowa.
