The Johnnie wrestling team returns to the mat with a pair of competitions this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 4-5, at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. SJU faces the Blugolds for a 7 p.m. dual on Friday, followed by UWEC’s Don Parker Open at 10 a.m. Saturday.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s wrestling hosted its annual North Country Open its last time out on Jan. 23 in Sexton Arena. The tournament consisted of 183 wrestlers, across all divisions of collegiate wrestling, on six mats.
Freshman D.J. Myles (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) led eight Johnnies in the silver bracket by taking the title at 197 pounds with a 3-0 record. He started the day with a 7-5 decision and won the semifinal with a first-period pin. Myles pinned classmate Tommy Gilmore (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) 30 seconds into the second period for the first-place finish and improve his record to 9-7 this season.
Gilmore received a first-round bye and earned his first collegiate win via fall in the semifinal.
A LOOK AT THE BLUGOLDS: Wisconsin-Eau Claire is coming off of a tournament win at Wheaton’s (Ill.) Pete Wilson Invitational last weekend (Jan. 28-29). Seven Blugolds placed, including first-place finishes by sophomore Tyler Fleetwood (133 lbs.) and senior Mason Hawkins (heavyweight). Freshman Zach Sato claimed second at 141 pounds, while senior Chase Schmidt (165) and freshman Jared Stricker (174) took third.
SATURDAY (No Spectators): Aside from the Johnnies and host Blugolds, Saturday’s tournament is scheduled to include wrestlers from Augsburg, Bryant & Stratton (Wis.), Concordia-Moorhead, Division I Illinois, Luther (Iowa), Division I Minnesota, Nebraska Wesleyan, Rochester C.T.C., Division I South Dakota State, Division II St. Cloud State, Wheaton (Ill.), Division I Wisconsin, Wisconsin-La Crosse and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
BACK IN 3 WEEKS: The Johnnies return to UWEC’s McPhee Physical Education Center in three weeks for the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional on Friday (11 a.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.), Feb. 25-26.
