Mustangs down Mavericks for first time since 2014
MARSHALL, Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (2-6, 2-6 NSIC) closed the regular season in style, defeating Minnesota State University (2-6, 2-6 NSIC) 24-16 for the first time since 2014 and second time since 1990 inside the PE Gym on Sunday afternoon.
Jackson Stauffacher would open the match at 125 pounds, taking a 1-0 lead into the third period before a dominant third period, delivering a pin at 6:35 to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead.
After dropping a forfeit at 133 pounds, MSU would get on the board at 141 pounds, recording a late escape and picking up a riding point to win a 4-2 decision.
In his final home dual, Robert Shields would electrify the crowd at 149, picking up a third-period reversal and receiving a riding point to win 3-2 and give the Mustangs a 15-3 lead through four bouts.
Lucas Hodges would keep the momentum rolling at 157, taking a 2-2 match into the third period before recording an escape to take a 3-2 lead. He would be on the wrong end of a stalling call to even the score but would record a takedown in the closing seconds to win by decision and grow the Mustang lead into the intermission.
The Mavericks would come out of the locker room looking for a comeback, picking up a decision at 165 and a major decision at 174 to cut the Mustang lead to 18-10, but Caden Steffen would end the run with a 6-4 win in sudden victory, and Dillon McEachran would put the match out of reach with a late 3-2 decision to give SMSU a 24-10 lead.
MSU would win by fall at 285, but it would not be enough to overcome the early dominance by SMSU.
“Today was exactly what we preach.” Said head coach Chayse Jackson. “We did the little things right, we stayed in the fight, and took them into deep water. I am proud of all the guys, and extremely happy for these seniors. For the first time in their careers SMSU took out MSU!”
Next action for both teams is Feb. 26 when they compete at the NCAA Division II Super Regional at Moorhead, Minn.
