Two Auggies win titles at Grand View Open

DES MOINES, Iowa — Two Augsburg University women’s wrestlers claimed individual titles among strong competition at the Grand View University Open, held on Saturday.

Emily Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS), the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s NCAA national rankings at 109 pounds, improved to 18-0 on the season with another dominating performance, winning five matches, including three by pin and a 29-second 10-0 technical fall, to claim her weight class title. After her opening technical fall, she scored pins of 36 seconds and 41 seconds, before scoring a 2:50 pin in the semifinals over Iowa Wesleyan’s Mia Palumbo, the No. 11-ranked 109-pounder in the latest NAIA national rankings. In the finals, she scored an 8-5 win over Sydney Petzinger of North Central (Ill.), ranked No. 5 in the NWCA/NCAA rankings. Of Shilson’s 18 wins this season, eight are by technical fall and four are by pin. She is now 40-0 in her collegiate career.

Marlynne Deede (JR, Springville, Utah/Springville HS), ranked No. 3 nationally at 155 pounds, claimed her second tournament victory of the season, going 5-0 with three pins and two technical falls. In the semifinals, she scored a 2:02 pin of India Page of Brewton-Parker (Ga.), ranked No. 13 in the NAIA, and in the finals, she dominated in an 11-0, 3:31 technical fall win over Tiyahna Askew of Missouri Baptist, the No. 3-ranked NAIA wrestler at 155. Deede is now 20-3 on the season with 11 technical falls and four pins.

Faith Tuttle (JR, North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul HS) finished second at 191 pounds, going 4-1 with two pins and a 59-second technical fall. In her opening match, she scored a 50-second pin of De’Zirae White of Missouri Valley, ranked No. 17 in the NAIA, and in the semifinals, she scored a 2:28 pin of Natalia Villegas of Grand View, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA. Tuttle is now 16-5 on the season with four technical falls and eight pins.

No. 5-ranked 136-pounder Nina Makem (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) went 5-1 on the day, with a pin and two technical falls, to improve to 24-5 on the season.

Gabby Skidmore (JR, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) also had a 5-1 afternoon at 123 pounds, with two pins and four technical falls, moving to 16-3 on the season.

Kya Rybachek (SO, Mountain Iron, Minn./Hibbing HS) went 3-3 to finish sixth at 143 pounds.

Going 1-2 for Augsburg were Sierra Brown Ton (JR, Allen, Texas/Einstein HS) at 136, Melissa Jacobs (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) at 170 and Madison Horn (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) at 170.
