Gable Steveson Wins Second National Title to Close Out NCAA Championships

DETROIT – Gable Steveson closed out the show on Saturday night, as he claimed the second NCAA title of his career, defeating Arizona State’s Cohlton Schultz by a score of 6-2

Steveson got to his offense early as he hit his infamous snap, go-behind off the whistle for the first points of the match. Following a Schultz escape, Steveson secured another takedown to make it 4-1 after the first period. The two competitors traded escapes in the final two periods, and a Steveson riding time point wrapped up the 6-2 decision win.

Steveson becomes just the sixth multiple-time NCAA champion with the victory, and he closes out his career in the Maroon & Gold with an 85-2 career record, including 13 falls, 21 technical falls, and 24 major decisions. He ends his collegiate career on a 52-match win streak and holds the highest win percentage in the history of the program.

The Gophers also had two other competitors who closed out their seasons on Saturday morning, as both Patrick McKee and Jake Bergeland finished the year with their hands raised as they both secured their NCAA medals.

Patrick McKee began the morning in the consolation semifinals, where he faced off against Cornell Vito Arujau and fell via a 7-3 decision. McKee would then fall to the fifth-place match against last year’s NCAA finalist Brandon Courtney (Arizona), where Pat would roll to an 8-3 decision win thanks to a trio of takedowns and over three minutes of riding time in the bout.

Jake Bergeland only took the mat once this morning as he went to battle in the 7th place match against C.J. Composto (Penn). Bergeland would go on to dominate in his final match of the season, as he would secure two takedowns and a four-point turn en route to a 10-0 major decision win.

As a team, the Gophers would finish in 11th place with 48.5 points. Steveson was also named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler in the post-tournament awards.
