Gophers Get Three All-Americans as Day Two Closes At NCAAs

DETROIT – The second day of the NCAA Championships wrapped inside Little Caesars Arena as three Gophers locked in their spots on the podium, including Gopher heavyweight Gable Steveson who is set to compete for his second national title in tomorrow night’s session.

The day started for Steveson in the quarterfinal round as the senior would face off against Lucas Davison (Northwestern). After Gable conceded the opening takedown in the match for just the second time in his career, Steveson would rattle off the next four takedowns to take the 10-5 decision win. Then in the semifinals, Steveson would defeat Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet by an 8-3 decision, earning two takedowns in the final frame en route to his second NCAA finals berth.

Jake Bergeland also began his day in the quarterfinals but would fall to Kizhan Clarke (North Carolina) by a 3-0 decision. The loss dropped Bergeland to the Round of 12, where he would need to defeat fifth-seed Andrew Alirez (Northern Colorado) to earn All-America honors. In the bout, Alirez would strike first with the opening takedown, but Bergeland responded with a reversal and turned Alirez to his back to get the pin.

Patrick McKee had himself the busiest day of the team, as he would rattle off four straight wins on Friday, as he became an All-American for the second time in his career. In the morning session, McKee would defeat Trevor Mastrogiovanni (Oklahoma State) by major decision and Brody Teske (Northern Iowa) by decision to lock in his spot in the nightcap. Then on Thursday night, McKee would pin Killian Cardinale (West Virginia) in the blood round before earning a comeback win over Eric Barnett (Wisconsin) in his final match of the day.

Michael Blockhus and Isaiah Salazar also competed in the Friday morning session, but both competitors would fall in their first match of the day and would be eliminated from the tournament.

Heading into tomorrow’s slate, McKee and Bergeland will kick things off in the morning session as McKee will wrestle Vito Arujau (Cornell) in the consolation semifinals, while Jake Bergeland will face off against C.J. Composto in the seventh-place bout. Then on Saturday night, Gable Steveson will take center stage as he looks for his second NCAA title against Arizona State’s Cohlton Schultz.
