DETROIT – The North Dakota State wrestling team’s season ended Friday at the the2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships inside Little Caesars Arena.
Four Bison qualified for day two of the event, but three Bison; 141 Dylan Droegemueller, 165 Luke Weber and 197 Owen Pentz, were eliminated during the day session. 157 Jared Franek was eliminated in the final elimination match in the Friday evening session.
Franek fell to Jacori Teemer of Arizona State in his first match of the day in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Franek fell behind 2-1 in the first after Teemer recorded a takedown. Franek would tie the match 2-2 with an escape to begin the second, but Teemer picked up another takedown and an escape in the third to go up 5-3 and send Franek to the consolation bracket Friday evening.
In the Friday evening session, Franek battled Carr in a heartbreaking thriller. The two went scoreless in the first and Carr took the lead with an escape in the second. However, Franek recorded a late takedown in the second and a Carr escape tied it at 2-2 headed to the third. Franek would escape to start the third, but Carr secured a takedown with 26 seconds left to win 4-3.
Dylan Drogemueller started off the day for the Bison with a victory in his first consolation match of the day as he advanced with a 6-1 decision over Matt Kazimir of Columbia. Kazimir picked up an escape in the second period to take the lead. Droegemueller elected to start the third period neutral and late in the period, he recorded a takedown and secured four back points to come-from-behind and move on to the third consolation round.
Drogemueller’s tournament would come to an end in the third consolation round, as he fell to Chad Red of Nebraska. Red scored the first points with a takedown and took a 6-1 lead after an escape, a penalty point against Droegemueller, and a takedown in the second. However, Droegemueller would work the match back to 6-6 and the end of the third, but Red edged out a riding time point with 1:03 of riding time to pick up the win and eliminate the junior.
Luke Weber and Owen Pentz were each eliminated in their first match on Friday. Weber would take an early lead against Austin Yant with a takedown, but the Northern Iowa wrestler scored the final three points of the match to win 3-2.
Pentz would fall to Nino Bonaccorsi of Pitt by a 3-2 score as well. Pentz took a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second, but Bonaccorsi secured a takedown and held it out to end the second. Pentz would give up a penalty point in the third to fall behind 3-1. He would ride out the entire period but was unable to get a turn, receiving only a riding time point at the end.
With Franek’s elimination Friday night, the Bison wrestling season comes to an end on day two of the NCAA Championships. The Bison will finish the national championships with 7.5 points in 34th place out of 69 teams.
