10 Auggies are Scholar All-Americans
MINNEAPOLIS — For the third time in program history, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team has claimed the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III academic team national title, with a team grade-point average of 3.879 leading all NCAA Division III programs, it was announced on Friday.
Ten Auggies were named NWCA Division III Scholar All-Americans: Seth Goetzinger (FY, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS), Blake Jagodzinske (FY, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS), Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Kaden Reetz (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial HS), Matt Rogge (FY, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS), Nick Rogge (SR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS), Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS), Carter Sorenson (FY, Lengby, Minn./Fosston HS), Derek Steele (FY, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) and Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS). It is the third career Scholar All-America honor for Nick Rogge, and the second for Kim and Stuhl.
Over the past 37 seasons, Augsburg has produced 186 NWCA Scholar All-Americans. Augsburg has had 163 student-athletes honored since 1997. Since 1998, Augsburg has finished among the top 10 teams in the academic national listing 15 times, winning the academic national title in 1999 (3.480 team GPA) and 2012 (3.7341 team GPA). Augsburg has finished second four times, third twice, and fourth twice since 1998.
Augsburg was one of just four teams to finish in the top 10 in both the NCAA Division III team championships and in the NWCA Division III Scholar All-America team national race. The Auggies placed third at the NCAA Division III National Championships in March in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) finished second in the academic race (3.845) and fifth at the national tournament; Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) finished fourth in the academic race (3.786) and seventh at the national tournament, and Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) finished 10th in the academic race (3.642) and eighth at the national tournament.
• An undecided major with a 3.91 GPA, Seth Goetzinger finished 14-6 in his first collegiate season at 165 pounds, with nine pins and two major decisions.
• A finance major with a 4.00 GPA, Blake Jagodzinske finished 13-5 in his first collegiate season at 157 pounds, with three pins and two major decisions.
• A communication studies major with a 3.57 GPA, Tyler Kim competed in his second national tournament in 2022, earning All-American honors for the second time with a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds. He finished 38-8 this season with 19 pins, two technical falls, and five major decisions, and is now 69-20 in his career.
• A business administration and economics major, Kaden Reetz finished 23-9 in his first collegiate wrestling season at 149 and 157 pounds, with 11 pins, two technical falls, and five major decisions.
• A finance major with a 4.00 GPA, Matt Rogge finished 24-16 in his first collegiate season at 165 pounds, with four pins, four technical falls, and a major decision.
• A biology major with a 3.64 GPA, Nick Rogge competed in his second national tournament in 2022 at 184 pounds. He finished 25-6 this season with three pins, 14 technical falls, and three major decisions, and is now 90-22 in his career.
• A finance major with a 4.00 GPA, Tyler Shilson competed in his second national tournament in 2022, finishing in third place at 157 pounds. Shilson finished 33-4 this season with four pins, 17 technical falls, and six major decisions, and is now 71-29 in his collegiate career, 43-5 in two seasons at Augsburg.
• An undecided major with a 4.00 GPA, Carter Sorenson finished 14-4 in his first collegiate season at 174 pounds, with three pins, three technical falls, and a major decision.
• An undecided major with a 3.55 GPA, Derek Steele competed in his first national tournament in 2022 at 125 pounds, finishing 24-8 with 13 pins, a technical fall, and two major decisions.
• A finance major with a 4.00 GPA, Charlie Stuhl competed in his second collegiate season at 149 pounds, finishing 29-13 this season with six pins, seven technical falls, and two major decisions. He is 35-15 in his Auggie career.
