IRVING, Texas — For the second year in a row, South Dakota State’s Clay Carlson has been honored as the Big 12 Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. League officials made the announcement Tuesday after a vote among the conference’s head coaches.
A junior from Willmar, Minnesota, Carlson has compiled a 3.92 grade-point average while majoring in animal science and pre-veterinary medicine. On the mat, he finished third in the 141-pound weight class at the 2022 Big 12 Wrestling Championship, earning his second consecutive berth in the NCAA Championships. Carlson posted a 33-6 record during the 2021-22 campaign, including a 15-2 mark in duals.
In his three seasons in the Jackrabbit starting lineup, Carlson holds a 74-31 career record and was an All-American during the 2020-21 season with an eighth-place finish in the 141-pound division at the NCAA Division I Championships. He also has been a first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree three times.
