A group of South Dakota State University wrestlers is slated to compete this weekend at the 2022 United States Marine Corps U.S. Open in Las Vegas.
Competition begins Friday and runs through Sunday at South Point Hotel & Casino.
Representing the Jackrabbits in the Senior division at 61 kilograms is Gabriel Tagg. A native of Lodi, Ohio, Tagg compiled a 13-6 record at 133 pounds after joining the team in January.
Scheduled to compete in the U20 freestyle division are Derrick Cardinal (61 kg), Cael Swensen (70 kg), and Jack Thomsen (74 kg). Cardinal and Swensen both redshirted during the 2021-22 season at SDSU and posted respective records of 11-6 and 17-11 while wrestling in open tournaments.
Thomsen backed up at the middle weights during his sophomore campaign, compiling a 16-12 record.
In addition, 2022 signee Bennett Berge is entered in the U20 freestyle tournament in the 86-kilogram weight class. Berge recently completed his standout prep career at Kasson-Mantorville (Minn.) High School by winning his fifth individual state title. He also was named Mr. Minnesota Wrestler for 2022 by the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.
