MOORHEAD – Minnesota State University Moorhead head wrestling coach Kris Nelson has announced the Dragons’ 2022-23 recruiting class. Eleven student-athletes are joining MSUM this week.
“We are excited to add these individuals to the Dragon wrestling program,” Nelson said. “This is a talented group of wrestlers who we are excited to get to work with this season. Thank you to the Dragon wrestling staff and recruiting coordinator/assistant wrestling coach Griffin Osing for their hard work bringing these individuals to Dragon Athletics.”
Here’s a look at the recruits:
Jonas Anez (165, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS)
Three-time state qualifier and finished fifth at state…finished with 125 career wins…four-time all-conference selection…two-time team captain…six-year letterwinner.
Thomas Carillo (133, Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho HS/Western Wyoming CC)
Transfer from Western Wyoming Community College…individual state champion and part of two state championship teams…had 36-6 record.
Shad Cano (133, Dallas, Texas/First Baptist Academy)
Two-time Tapps State Champion…named Tapps Most Outstanding Wrestler…team MVP…Newcomer of the Year.
Beau Daily (149, Anchorage, Ala./South Anchorage HS)
Two-time state placer, placing third and sixth…two-time team captain…wrestled at 140 and 145 pounds…wrestled for Alaska Avalanche Association.
Jacob Davis (149, Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS/Northland CTC)
NCJAA Region 13 champion and national qualifier at Northland…202-58 career high school record which included a sixth-place finish at state…two-time section champion.
Wayne Mellon (165/174, Ninilchik, Ala./Soldotna HS)
Alaska state champion, finished with 21-0 record…competed for Soldotna Wailers Wrestler…four-year letterwinner.
Will Price (184, Vernal, Utah/Uintah HS)
State champion…finished with 59-8 record over final two seasons…competed for Uintah Wrestling Club…four-year letterwinner.
Jacob Reinardy (174, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS)
Two-time state participant…recorded more than 100 varsity wins…two-time all-conference…two-year captain…four-year letterwinner.
Airin Spell (285, Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood Academy/Presbyterian)
Tennessee state champion…all-state honoree…earned state runner-up honors as a junior…was a member of the University of Tennessee’s football team for two seasons as an offensive lineman.
Caleb Vacura (184, Greenbush, Minn./Badger-Greenbush-Middle River HS)
Three-time state placer and four-time state qualifier…finished 42-4 as a senior and placed third at state…three-time section champion.
Cody Wienen (157/165, Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS)
State placer…three-time section champion…184 career wins, fifth most in school history…all-state honoree…four-time all-conference.
