Foy, Nagao to Represent Team USA at U23 World Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – A pair of current Gophers will be heading overseas in hopes of becoming a world champion, as both Michial Foy and Aaron Nagao will compete in the U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain next week.

Foy, a sixth-year senior for Minnesota, will be competing on Monday morning at 87 kilograms as the Greco-Roman portion of the tournament gets underway. Foy earned his ticket to the World Championships by winning the 87-kilogram bracket at the U23 World Team Trials earlier this summer, beating opponent Vincent Baker in the Best-of-3 finals.

Michial Foy

The Foy family is no stranger to Greco-Roman wrestling, as Foy’s father Mike Foy was a two-time Greco-Roman Olympic Team member in both 1988 and 1992.

Aaron Nagao

Aaron Nagao, a redshirt freshman for the “U” will have to wait until Saturday, October 22 before he takes the mat as he is set to compete in the 61-kilogram division in Freestyle. Nagao tore through his U23 World Team Trials bracket this past June, going 7-0 on the weekend en route to a World Championships bid. He met fellow Gopher teammate Jake Gliva in the finals of that tournament, where Nagao would prevail in straight matches.

The U23 World Championships take place from October 17-23, with all live coverage of the tournament being streamed on FloWrestling. Fans can also follow along on Twitter at @GopherWrestling and @GopherWC for live updates of the event as they happen.
