Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State enters the 2022-23 campaign rated #18 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Preseason Poll.
The Mavericks, who finished seventh at last year’s NCAA Division II national championship tournament, return six starters from last year’s team.
Included amongst the returnees is senior heavyweight Darrell Mason, who went 22-0 last year en route to a national championship. Mason enters the season rated #1 in his weight class. The 2021-22 NWCA DII Wrestler of the Year, Mason was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the national tournament where he went 4-0. He also claimed the Super Region V championship after posting a 4-0 record to advance to the national tournament and was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Year.
Now in his 34th season of college coaching (and his 30th at Minnesota State), Jim Makovsky has built a 296-127-3 mark with the Mavericks and is closing in on the school record for wrestling coaching wins held by Rummy Macias, who was 299-207-12 in his 38 years with the program from 1959-88.
Minnesota State opens the season Nov. 5 when individuals will compete at the Yellowjacket Open in Rochester, Minn.
