MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSUM head wrestling coach Kris Nelson announced the hiring of Brandon Metz as an assistant coach to the Dragon staff. Metz will focus on working with the heavyweights and brings a wealth of knowledge to the mat.
“We’re happy to add Brandon to our coaching staff. He brings in a lot of success and experience to our program,” said Nelson. “He will mainly work with the upper weights, but will provide valuable knowledge throughout our lineup.”
Metz was a stalwart at North Dakota State University, starting four consecutive seasons at the heavyweight spot. In his career, Metz was a three-time NCAA Division I qualifier and was team captain his final two seasons with the Bison. Metz competed at four Big 12 Championship meets, placing seventh in 2020, fifth in 2021 and eighth in 2022. In total, Metz racked up 62 wins in his collegiate career, 13 of those wins coming by fall and eight by major decision. Metz was also a standout academic while at North Dakota State, garnering four appearances on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team with two trips to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team as well.
He also enjoyed a decorated high school career at West Fargo High School where he was a three-time North Dakota state champion at heavyweight. Metz tallied a 50-0 record in his senior season en route to his third state title and has 200 wins in his prep career. Metz was also a two-time USA Wrestling Greco Roman national champion and is a five-time USA Wrestling All-American.
The Dragons will compete at the DWU Open in Mitchell, S.D., on Saturday. MSUM will have their first home dual on November 17 when they welcome Concordia.
