Meekins named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

Redshirt junior transfer earned Yellowjacket Title at 133 with a pin of No. 1 Reece Barnhardt (MARY)

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State redshirt junior 133-pounder Caleb Meekins has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week in his debut weekend with the Huskies. Meekins went 3-0 at the Yellowjacket Open to earn the title at 133 pounds, earning bonus points in each of his three matches with a pin of No. 1 Reece Barnhardt (Mary) in the Finals.

“I was really proud of his performance,” said head coach Steve Costanzo, “He had a pin, a tech fall and a major in there as well. Bonus points in all three matches, then you wrestle the No. 1 guy in the country and come out on top in that fashion is pretty impressive.”

Meekins joined SCSU this fall after a redshirt season at Northern Illinois and two All-American campaigns at Indian Hills College. The Livonia, Michigan product earned ICCAC and NJCAA North Central District Championships at Indian Hills while placing fourth and third at the 2021 and 2022 NJCAA Championships.

Three Huskies earned NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors last season as Anthony Herrera (Nov. 9), Dominic Murphy (Dec. 13), and Joey Bianchini (Jan. 24) each picked up weekly nods. Like Meekins, Herrera earned the league’s honor in his debut weekend.

“Our new wrestlers just need confidence,” Costanzo continued, “They need matches, they need to know that they have the ability to wrestle at this level. At the same time, they’ve got to keep coming back to the room with a good attitude and keep getting better. All of our new guys had a good day, and I was pleased with many of their performances.”

The Huskies look ahead to the Dakota Wesleyan Open this weekend on Saturday in Mitchell, South Dakota.

“We just want to continue to make improvements throughout each week,” concluded Costanzo, “If we can do that, good things are going to happen, and we’re going to be where we want to be at the end of the year.”
