MSUM Gets Past Jamestown In Opener
JAMESTOWN, N.D. — In their opening dual of the season, MSUM wrestling was able to capture a handful of individual wins while also taking the dual from the Jimmies 23-16.
Clayson Mele jolted MSUM to begin the dual with a second-period pin over Elijah Barajas. In a match that looked to be heading towards a technical fall, the sophomore Mele was able to make the turn and get the fall. Junior Hunter Hayes kept the momentum going with a major decision win over Jace Goebel which gave the Dragons a quick 10 team points.
True freshman Parker Benz began his collegiate career with a bang at 141 pounds. The Bismarck, N.D., native earned a second-period fall over Jamestown’s Degan Linne. Following up that performance was a decision win from junior Jacob Davis at 149 pounds. Through four weight classes, MSUM led Jamestown 19-0.
The Jimmies were able to climb back into the dual thanks to four decision wins in the upper weights. The Dragons were helped thanks to senior Anthony Castro at 174 pounds. The scrappy Castro was able to grab a major decision over Carston Toedter. That victory proved to be the difference maker in the dual as a whole. While the Dragons fell by decision in the ensuing three matches, they still won the dual 23-16.
The Dragons will remain in Jamestown as they will participate in the annual Jimmie Open which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. MSUM will dual again on November 17 when they welcome Concordia College to Nemzek Fieldhouse.
