No. 5 Viking Wrestling Takes the Road for UMN Dual

Set for SFSU and WCU Duals Sunday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.–Augustana wrestling is on the road this week for a dual against the University of Minnesota on Thursday. The Vikings head to Chadron, Nebraska, on Sunday for duals against San Francisco State and Western Colorado.

The Gophers
Minnesota, competing in the Big Ten conference at the Division I level, sees a spot at No. 13 in the latest NCAA national rankings. The Gophers have nine wrestlers that are nationally ranked on their roster and have notched wins over Binghamton and No. 24 South Dakota State this season.

UMN finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 4-6 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten conference action. The team completed the NCAA DI Championships in 11th place with one individual champion in Gable Steveson at 285 pounds. Jake Bergeland placed seventh at 141 pounds and Patrick McKee placed fifth at 125 pounds to earn All-American honors.

The Gophers have two nationally ranked wrestlers in the Thursday lineup with Andrew Sparks ranked 27th at 165 pounds and Garrett Joles ranked 28th at 197 pounds.

The Gators
San Francisco State holds a record of 1-1 this season and has two more duals on the schedule prior to the action on Sunday. The Gators fell to Colorado Mesa in the first dual of the season, 28-12. The team was victorious over New Mexico Highlands with a final score of 23-15.

On Friday, San Francisco State competes against Fort Hays State and Colorado School of Mines before heading to Chadron, Nebraska.

The Mountaineers
Western Colorado is 0-1 in dual action this season after falling to Air Force, 29-18, in its first dual of the year. The Mountaineers are set to host Colorado Mesa on Thursday, then travel to Las Vegas, New Mexico, for the Doug Moses Open hosted by New Mexico Highlands.

On Sunday, WCU is set to face St. Cloud State and Chadron State prior to the dual against Augustana.

The Vikings
Augustana comes off of the first dual of the season against No. 24 South Dakota State of the D1 Big 12 Conference. Miles Fitzgerald earned a major decision victory at 157 pounds over his opponent, scoring four team points for AU.

The Vikings have participated in two tournaments this season. The team competed at the DWU Open, with Jacob Tvinnereim finishing the tournament on the podium. Miles Fitzgerald and Kolby Kost both finished fourth at the DWU Open in their respective weight classes. The first tournament of the season for AU was the Yellowjacket Open that saw four podium finishes and a total of eight wrestlers finishing in the top five in their weight classes.

AU, nationally ranked at No. 5 in the NWCA Preseason Rankings, have six wrestlers ranked nationally in the NWCA Preseason Poll.

Sophomore Jaxson Rohman is ranked eighth at 125 pounds. Rohman enters the 2022-23 season after placing third at the NCAA Super Region V tournament and qualifying for the NCAA National tournament in 2021-22.

Junior Jack Huffman enters the 2022-23 campaign ranked second at 133 pounds. Huffman, a returning All-American, placed eighth at the NCAA DII Championships last year and placed first at the NCAA Super Region V tournament.

At 157 pounds, junior Tyler Wagener is ranked in the sixth spot. Wagener, a 2021-22 national qualifier, finished third at the NCAA Super Region V tournament and held an overall record of 16-10 last season.

Sophomore Miles Fitzgerald is ranked 10th at 165 pounds. Fitzgerald went 23-10 overall and 8-3 in dual action, finished second at the NCAA Super Region V tournament and qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships at 165 pounds in 2021-22.

Junior Cade Mueller sees the fourth spot in the rankings at 174 pounds. Mueller held an overall record of 18-5 in 2021-22 and finished first at the NCAA Super Region V tournament, qualifying for the NCAA DII National Championships.

Rounding out the individual rankings for the Vikings is junior Steven Hajas. Hajas finished third at the NCAA Super Region V tournament and qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships.
