Auggie men’s wrestlers dominate at MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Winning eight of the 10 weight-class titles in a dominant effort, the No. 2-ranked Augsburg University men’s wrestling team claimed the team championship at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational, held on Saturday.

Nineteen Auggies competed at the 18-team meet, winning eight weight-class titles. All but one Auggie finished in the top five in their weight classes, as the Auggies scored 174.0 team points, outdistancing second-place Wisconsin-Platteville’s 102.5 points. The 19 Auggies combined for an 86-20 record, including 22 pins, 12 technical falls and 12 major decisions.

No. 2-ranked 157-pounder Tyler Shilson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) continued his unbeaten run, improving to 14-0 on the year with five bonus-point wins — four technical falls and one pin — to easily claim his weight class. He outscored his opponents by an 81-2 margin in his five matches. Of Shilson’s 14 wins this season, 11 are of the bonus-point variety — nine technical falls and two pins.

No. 3-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) also had a dominant day, going 4-0 with two pins and a major decision to improve to 14-0 on the year in winning his weight class. Kim claimed a 5-1 win over No. 14-ranked Brett Schoenherr of UW-Platteville in the semifinals, then scored a 5:13 pin of Daldon Sell of Concordia-Wisconsin in the finals. Kim now has seven pins and a major decision among his 14 victories.

No. 6-ranked 141-pounder Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) won his weight class with four bonus-point victories — two third-period technical falls and two sub-minute pins, to improve to 15-1 on the season. Stuhl now has an eight-match winning streak, and has five pins, three technical falls and four major decisions on the year.

Cooper Willis (FY, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) claimed his first collegiate tournament title, going 5-0 with two pins and a major decision to capture the 165-pound crown, improving to 11-2 on the season.

Parker Venz (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) went 4-0 with a 59-second technical fall and 3:51 pin to capture the 197-pound class, improving to 11-3 on the year. He scored a 6-1 win over No. 8-ranked Tyler Hannah of UW-Platteville in the semifinals, then pinned Gunnar Garriques of the University of Chicago) in 3:51 in the finals.

Augsburg teammates shared the titles at three weight classes. At 149 pounds, Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) and Cole Becker (FY, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) shared the crown. Stuhl went 3-0 with a major decision, pin and an 18-2 technical fall win over Drake Campbell of Triton (Ill.), the No. 3-ranked 149-pounder in the NJCAA national rankings. Becker went 4-0 with a technical fall and two major decisions to capture his second collegiate tournament title.

Adam Sylvester (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Carter Sorenson (SO, Lengby, Minn./Fosston HS) shared the title at 174 pounds, with both wrestlers going 3-0 on the day. Sorenson had a major decision and also claimed an 11-7 win over No. 14-ranked Luke Silva of Aurora (Ill.) in the semifinals.

No. 7-ranked 197-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) and teammate Brian Ramos (FY, Perham, Minn./Perham HS) shared the weight class title. Schwanebeck-Osterman had two pins and a technical fall in going 3-0, while Ramos had a pin in going 4-0 on the day.

Three Auggies placed third — 141-pounder Brady Gross (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS), 149-pounder Lucas Jagodzinske (FY, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) and 165-pounder Matt Rogge (SO, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS).

Blake Jagodzinske (SO, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) placed fourth at 157, as did Wyatt Kaczrowski (SO, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) at 125. Placing fifth were Tanner Kroells (JR, Montrose, Minn./Delano HS) at 165 and Robert Beese (FY, Amery, Wis./Amery HS) at 285.
