FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Claiming championships in five of the 10 weight classes, along with four runner-up finishes, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team claimed the title at the Citrus Invitational tournament, held on Thursday and Friday.
Eighteen Auggie wrestlers competed at the 16-team tournament, with 17 claiming top-seven individual finishes. The Auggies combined for a 99-21 record at the two-day tournament, with 51 bonus-point victories (28 pins, nine technical falls, 14 major decisions). Augsburg won the meet with 219.5 points, ahead of second-place Castleton (Vt.) with 170.0 points, and third-place North Carolina-Pembroke, the No. 18-ranked team in Division II, with 110.0 points.
No. 2-ranked 157-pounder Tyler Shilson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) improved to 19-0 on the season with his third tournament victory of the season, sharing his weight-class title with teammate Blake Jagodzinske (SO, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS). Shilson dominated his four victories, with a pin, two technical falls and an 8-0 major decision win over No. 7-ranked Patrick McGraw of John Carroll (Ohio) in the semifinals. Shilson outscored his opponents by a 48-2 margin during the tournament, and now has three pins, 11 technical falls and a major decision among his 19 victories.
In earning his second tournament title of the season, Jagodzinske claimed a 4:39 pin over No. 8-ranked Peter Kane of Williams (Mass.) in the semifinals among his three victories. Jagodzinske is now 20-4 on the year with eight pins, two technical falls and two major decisions.
Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS), ranked No. 7 at 184 pounds, dominated his weight class with a pin, technical fall and major decision among his five wins to claim his fourth tournament title of the year. He outscored his opponents by a 48-4 margin in his five bouts in the tournament, which he won with a 6:44 pin of Sampson of Castleton. Schwanebeck-Ostermann is now 19-3 on the season with eight pins, two technical falls and three major decisions.
Cooper Willis (FY, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) earned his second collegiate tournament championship, claiming the 154-pound crown with five victories, including a 17-0 technical fall in his opening match. He scored an 8-4 win over No. 3-ranked Cooper Pontelandolfo of New York University in the finals to improve to 19-3 on the year.
No. 15-ranked 174-pounder Seth Goetzinger (SO, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) won his third tournament of the season, improving to 17-2 on the season with five victories, including four by pin. He claimed a 1:14 pin of Buck Abidin of St. Thomas (Fla.), the No. 23-ranked NAIA wrestler at 174, in the finals. He now has nine pins among his 17 victories this season.
No. 14-ranked 149-pounder Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) scored the title in his weight class, going 5-0 with two pins and a major decision. He edged teammate Cole Becker (FY, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) 3-2 in the finals. Becker went 5-1 on the day with two major decisions. Stuhl is now 21-2 on the season with four pins, two technical falls and five major decisions, while Becker is now 21-3 on the year with two pins, five technical falls and seven major decisions.
Three nationally ranked Augsburg wrestlers finished second in their weight classes. No. 4-ranked 141-pounder Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) finished second, going 4-1 with three pins and a major decision. Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), the No. 2-ranked 285-pounder nationally, finished second with a 4-1 mark, incluidng three pins and a major decision. No. 13-ranked 197-pounder Parker Venz (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) also finished second, going 3-1 with three pins.
No. 11-ranked 165-pounder Matt Rogge (SO, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) finished third, going 5-2 with two pins and two major decisions. Brady Gross (JR, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS) pladed third at 141, going 6-1 during the tournament with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision.
Adam Sylvester (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) finished fourth at 174 pounds for the Auggies, while Carter Sorenson (SO, Lengby, Minn./Fosston HS) finished fifth at 174. Wyatt Kaczrowski (SO, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) finished seventh at 125, as did Tanner Kroells (JR, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) at 165 and Brian Ramos (FY, Perham, Minn./Perham HS) at 184.
