MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSUM hosted their annual Dragon Open inside Nemzek Fieldhouse as two Dragons made it to championship matches in their respective divisions. By day’s end, MSUM had one Dragon Open champion in freshman Wayne Mellon.
Red Division
10 Dragons competed in the red division with two of those wrestlers competing unattached. Thomas Carrillo finished his day with a 1-3 record on the mat which included a 18-6 decision to finish his day. At 125 pounds, Clayson Mele rounded out his open with a 2-2 record, scoring an opening match pinfall (2:05) and an 18-7 decision victory.
Jonas Anez also went 2-2 today at 165 pounds notching a decision win as well as a major decision. At heavyweight, Airin Spell picked up a major decision victory in the consolation ladder. Spell finished the day 2-1 after a thrilling 5-4 decision win in his final match of the day.
Senior heavyweight Andre Baguma had a terrific day for MSUM. The Fargo native scored a major decision win in his opening match and then made it to the red division finals with a semifinal decision victory. Baguma would fall in a 5-2 decision to take runner-up honors at heavyweight.
White Division
MSUM had five wrestlers compete in the white division at today’s Dragon Open. Three of those Dragons wrestled unattached along with Gunnar Mogen and Parker Benz. The freshman Benz went 1-2 on the day, but finished his Dragon Open with a second period pinfall victory. Mogen wrestled to a 2-3 record today which included one technical fall and a major decision.
The highlight for MSUM was unattached Wayne Mellon at 174 pounds. The true freshman wrestled a perfect 3-0 record this afternoon and took the white division title at his weight class. Mellon concluded his day with a swift pin in the championship match. Mellon secured the victory at 1:19 in the first period.

The Dragons will travel for a pair of road duals next weekend. MSUM is scheduled to dual Augustana in Sioux Falls on December 9 and Southwest Minnesota State the following day. The duals are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
