Auggie women fall in dual at top-ranked North Central
LA CROSSE, Wis. — The No. 5-ranked Augsburg University women’s wrestling team suffered a 34-9 defeat at the hands of top-ranked North Central University (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon at the La Crosse Area Wrestling Academy.
North Central claimed forfeit wins in the first three weight classes and won four of the seven bouts wrestled with the Auggies on Saturday, winning three by pin and one by technical fall. All three of Augsburg’s wins came by decision.
In one of the biggest matches of the afternoon, Augsburg’s No. 2-ranked 136-pounder, Nina Makem (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS), avenged an earlier loss this season to North Central’s top-ranked Yele Aycock with an 8-6 victory. Top-ranked 155-pounder Marlynne Deede (SR, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) improved to 11-0 on the season with a 10-4 victory over Tiera Jimerson, building a 6-0 lead after one period and countering Jimerson twice in the second period. Deede is now 57-18 in her collegiate career.
No. 3-ranked 143-pounder Katie Lange (SO, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) improved to 13-3 on the season with a 6-0 victory over No. 4-ranked Kendall Bostelman of North Central, her second win over Bostelman this season. Lange scored five of her six points in the second period to improve to 31-4 in her college career.
The two other meetings of ranked wrestlers both went in favor of the Cardinals, with North Central’s No. 5-ranked Amani Jones pinning Augsburg’s No. 7-ranked Gabrielle Torgerson (SR, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) at 123, and North Central’s top-ranked Yelena Makoyed scoring a 10-0, technical-fall win over Augsburg’s No. 4-ranked Ashley Lekas (SO, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) at 170.
