SMSU drops season-opening dual to NSU
MARSHALL, Minn. – The No. 23 ranked Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team opened its dual season suffering a 25-10 setback to No. 20 Northern State inside the PE Gym on Friday night.
NSU won seven bouts and earned bonus points in a pair of victories in improving to 2-2 overall, 1-1 NSIC. The Wolves won three of the seven matches by one point.
NSU won the first four bouts of the night, including a pair by technical fall in building a 16-0 lead. Hunter Pfantz suffered SMSU’s first one-point loss dropping a 2-1 decision at 133 pounds.
SMSU picked up its first win of the night as Sean Howk earned a 2-0 decision at 157 pounds.
The Mustangs’ Lucas Hodges (165 pounds, 2-1) and Elijah Sterner (174 pounds, 6-5) would both suffer tough one-point losses before No. 2 ranked Caden Steffen put SMSU back in the win column with a 10-1 major decision at 184 pounds.
Jacob Dykes closed the dual for the Mustangs, earning a 5-1 decision at 285.
SMSU continues the homestand on Saturday, facing MSU Moorhead at 3 p.m.
