Mustangs slay the Dragons for first dual win
MARSHALL, Minn. – The No. 23 ranked Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team claimed its first dual victory on the season, defeating Minnesota State Moorhead inside the PE Gym on Saturday afternoon.
SMSU won six bouts and earned bonus points in three victories, improving to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC on the season.
Despite losing the first three bouts of the night, SMSU would go on to win six of the last seven matches.
Luke Peterson and Sean Howk kickstarted the scoring for the Mustangs with their 15-4 and 12-4 major decision wins, respectively.
Coming out of intermission, Lucas Hodges picked up an 8-4 decision victory. Caden Steffen had an incredible performance picking up a 24-8 tech fall in 5:17.
A pair of decision victories by Carter Marx (3-1) and Jacob Dykes (16-14) secured the win for the Mustangs.
The Dragons’ next competition is against U Mary at home on January 13th. The Mustangs will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete at the Midwest Classic on Dec. 17-18.
