Auggies dominate in victory over Titans
OSHKOSH, Wis. — Winning seven of 10 bouts, all by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team dominated in a 36-10 dual-meet victory over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday afternoon.
Augsburg, the No. 6-ranked team in the latest NWCA Division III tournament rankings and No. 1 in the dual-meet rankings, trailed 6-0 after the opening two bouts to UW-Oshkosh, the No. 19-ranked team in the NWCA’s tournament rankings. But the Auggies won seven of the remaining eight bouts, claiming a pin, four technical falls, a major decision and a forfeit.
Seth Goetzinger (SO, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS), ranked No. 11 nationally at 174 pounds, improved to 20-4 with his 11th pin of the season, a 2:25 match-ender over Michael Loger. The win was his sixth by pin in his last 11 matches.
No. 5-ranked 141-pounder Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) scored his seventh technical fall victory of the year, a 16-0, 5:10 victory over Elijah Sanchez. He built a 14-0 lead after one period, rode out Sanchez in the second period, and ended the match with a takedown early in the third. Now 28-2 on the season, Stuhl has 21 bonus-point wins (eight pins, seven technical falls, six major decisions) and has bonus-point wins in seven of his last 10 matches.
No. 9-ranked 149-pounder Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) was even more dominant, scoring a 20-0 technical fall over Luke Moczynski, using two takedowns and four 4-point near-falls to end the match in 3:24. Stuhl is now 25-3 with 12 bonus-point wins (four pins, three technical falls, five major decisions).
Tyler Shilson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS), one of the nation’s leaders in technical falls, claimed his 12th of the season with a 16-1 triumph over Eli Mondrella. He built a 10-1 lead after one period, then used a reversal and four-point near-fall to end the match in 4:05. Shilson, ranked No. 4 nationally at 157 pounds, is now 20-3 on the year.
No. 6-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) improved to 27-1 on the season and 96-21 in his college career, ending the match with a 16-0 technical fall over Guyon Cyprian. He used two technical falls and three near-falls to end the bout in 3:50. The technical fall was his first of the season, to go along with 14 pins and two major decisions.
Cooper Willis (FY, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS), ranked No. 10 at 165 pounds, scored a 9-0 major decision victory to improve to 22-5 on the season.
FOR THE FOES
No. 2-ranked 197-pounder Beau Yineman claimed a 14-2 major decision win over Augsburg’s Parker Venz (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), ranked No. 12, in the only meeting of ranked wrestlers on the day.
